For many years, crop nutrition strategies have focused heavily on one question: how much nutrient should be applied to achieve the desired crop performance?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, another question is becoming just as important: how effectively can the crop use the nutrients that are available to it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the principle behind Nutrient Use Efficiency, or NUE<\/strong>. Its growing importance is being driven by a combination of higher and more volatile input costs, increasing environmental and regulatory pressure, and more variable growing conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Nutrient Use Efficiency matters more today<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Input economics are changing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fertilizers remain essential agricultural inputs, but their cost and availability have become less predictable. For growers, this raises the value of every unit of nutrient applied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The objective is not simply to reduce fertilization. It is to improve the return generated by the nutrients already entering the production system. Nutrients that remain unavailable to the crop or are lost before they can be used represent both an agronomic and an economic inefficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Environmental and regulatory expectations are increasing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nutrient losses are also under greater scrutiny. Excess nitrogen and phosphorus can move beyond the root zone through leaching, runoff or gaseous losses, creating environmental impacts while reducing the efficiency of the original input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why organizations such as FAO and European institutions increasingly treat nutrient efficiency and nutrient balance as important indicators of sustainable agricultural performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For crop nutrition strategies, the implication is clear: productivity and responsible nutrient management can no longer be treated as separate objectives.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing conditions are becoming less predictable<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Drought, heat and other abiotic stresses can affect root activity, nutrient availability and the plant’s ability to absorb and use nutrients efficiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As climate variability increases, the same fertilization programme may not deliver the same crop response under different soil, water and weather conditions. This makes nutrient efficiency increasingly relevant not only to input management, but also to crop resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does Nutrient Use Efficiency actually mean?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is no single universal NUE metric. Depending on the crop, nutrient and objective, it can be assessed through nutrient uptake, crop output relative to nutrient input, recovery efficiency or nutrient balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a practical level, however, NUE addresses one core issue: how effectively nutrients available within the production system are converted into crop performance rather than remaining unused or being lost.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This shifts the focus from input quantity alone to the interaction between nutrient supply, crop demand, soil conditions and plant physiology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where do plant biostimulants fit?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Plant biostimulants have become part of this discussion because their function is not necessarily to provide substantial quantities of nutrients themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under Regulation (EU) 2019\/1009<\/strong>, improving nutrient use efficiency is specifically included among the possible functions of a plant biostimulant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This does not mean that every biostimulant automatically improves NUE, nor that biostimulants replace balanced fertilization. Their role is complementary and should be evaluated through crop-specific evidence under defined agronomic conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For manufacturers and distributors, this makes field data especially important. The relevant question is whether measurable responses can be demonstrated under realistic application programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What two seasons of winter wheat data from EVYP show<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

EVYP evaluated Amino16\u00ae in two consecutive field experiments in winter durum wheat, conducted under the supervision of the Institute of Industrial and Forage Crops, Hellenic Agricultural Organization DEMETER<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trials compared different Amino16\u00ae application programmes across four nitrogen fertilisation levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2017-2018 growing season<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the first season, plots receiving two Amino16\u00ae applications recorded mid-season soil NO3-N concentrations that were 20%, 46% and 45% lower<\/strong> than the respective untreated controls at 70, 150 and 250 kg N\/ha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same nitrogen levels, grain yield was 28%, 22% and 18% higher<\/strong>, respectively, in the plots receiving two applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After harvest, residual soil NO3-N concentrations were also lower by 7%, 17% and 46%<\/strong> at the same three nitrogen levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The study authors interpreted the combination of lower soil nitrate concentrations and improved crop performance as an indication of greater nitrogen uptake and improved nitrogen efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2018-2019 growing season<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The experiment was repeated the following year with a different durum wheat variety and under different soil conditions<\/strong>. The season also included relative water stress typical of rainfed cereal production in Thessaly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ten days after the second Amino16\u00ae application, soil NO3-N concentrations were 20%, 23% and 24% lower<\/strong> than the respective controls at 70, 150 and 250 kg N\/ha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yield again followed a positive response. With two applications, grain yield increased by 26% at 0 kg N\/ha, 17% at 70 kg N\/ha, 17% at 150 kg N\/ha and 15% at 250 kg N\/ha<\/strong> compared with the respective untreated controls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After harvest, lower residual nitrate concentrations were again recorded in treated plots, while the study’s conclusions described a clear tendency towards lower residual NO3-N<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What can these trials reasonably tell us?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The most useful conclusion is not one isolated yield percentage. It is the repeated pattern observed across two seasons, different varieties, different soil conditions and several nitrogen fertilisation levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across both trials, Amino16\u00ae treatments were associated with higher grain yield and lower measured soil nitrate concentrations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These findings are consistent with improved nitrogen utilisation, which is also how the study authors interpreted the results. However, scientific precision matters: lower soil nitrate concentrations do not, by themselves, directly measure nitrogen uptake by the plant.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This distinction between what was measured and how those measurements are interpreted is important when evaluating biostimulant performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From nutrient input to nutrient strategy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nutrient Use Efficiency is becoming strategically important because crop production is being asked to achieve several objectives at the same time: maintain productivity, manage input costs, respond to changing growing conditions and reduce avoidable nutrient losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer is not simply to maximise or minimise fertiliser use. It is to build crop nutrition programmes in which nutrient source, rate, timing, soil conditions, plant physiology and complementary technologies work together more effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For growers, this means getting more productive value from available resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For distributors and crop nutrition companies, it means that credible field evidence, clear technical documentation and well-defined application protocols<\/strong> are becoming increasingly important when evaluating new solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nutrient Use Efficiency is therefore more than an agronomic metric. It is becoming part of a broader strategy for balancing crop performance, input economics and responsible nutrient management.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
